RELIEF WEEKEND at Good Shepherd Community Church is an annual event when we focus on how our church can be involved in the relief and help of physical and humanitarian needs around the World. This year the RELIEF WEEKEND and OFFERING will be November 23-24, and the theme is: “Take it personally…”. The special focus will be on Human Trafficking.
Five services and two outstanding speakers will help us gain an awareness and understanding of how the Good News of Jesus is the answer to the needs of so many who are trapped in the trafficking and sex industry both locally and around the globe. Additionally we will also be hearing how we can be involved in the RELIEF offering projects.
Close to 20 exhibitors in the South Foyer will be available to give us information about how we can be involved and serve both locally and around the world.
The RELIEF OFFERING 2013 will go to the following Projects:
COMPASSION FIRST – The main ministry of this Oregon based group is to provide long-term, hope-filled solutions for victims of child sexual trafficking, especially in Indonesia. As a church we will partner with Compassion First on many levels but are specifically going to be involved in “Holy Night Christmas Celebration” for Indonesian cemetery prostitutes – (held in January, 2014).
HUMAN TRAFFICKING - LOCAL MINISTIRES – We will support those from our congregation and other local ministries who are involved in ministries to those enslaved by Human Trafficking in the greater Portland area.
COMPASSION CONNECT – This is another Oregon based group, which brings churches together to serve (through medical clinics and other outreach models) in low-income housing complexes and local school districts. We are supporting their involvement in events and projects with a goal of preventing local trafficking (Abolition Now).
GOOD NEWS COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER - We will continue our partnership with this vital ministry, as they expand their outreach in the Rockwood area.
TIMOTHY CHILDREN – UGANDA – We will continue our involvement with CLIDE (Dr. Val) and the ministry among the Timothy children in NE Uganda. This will be our fifth year of supporting this project. We are making a difference among many of the Timothy kids as they are not only receiving an education, but also finding the Lord, and facing a future that does not involved living on the streets with no hope.
SOUTH SUDAN RELIEF – We desire to continue involvement in one of the neediest places on earth, South Sudan. We will be looking to both World Relief and ALARM for on-going projects in this war-torn and needy place as South Sudan continues to build infrastructure in a very volatile place.
SYRIAN REFUGEE MINISTRIES – We will continue to be involved with local churches and organization in the Middle East in their ministry to Syrian Refugees, specifically to those living within the borders of Lebanon.
CENTRAL ASIA RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS – With two of our Good Shepherd families living and serving in a very needy part of Central Asia, we want to continue to be involved in some of their local projects.
